As Storm Éowyn approaches Ireland, Met Éireann has issued a Status Red warning for wind, forecasting extreme, destructive gusts exceeding 130km/h, which pose a severe danger to life. These conditions may last for up to 48 hours, bringing widespread power outages, dangerous travel conditions, and significant disruption to critical infrastructure. The National Emergency Coordination Group has confirmed that all essential services are now operating in emergency mode, but for many, shelter will remain the most urgent need.
During this unprecedented storm, Dublin Simon Community is asking for your immediate support. In these extreme conditions, people sleeping rough in Dublin face life-threatening conditions over the next 24 to 48 hours. Our Street Outreach Team, which operates every day of the year, will safely attempt to reach those most vulnerable.
According to Niamh Brennan, Emergency Accommodation Senior Manager, an emergency plan will be in place for such severe conditions. “We have contingencies such as extra resources to ensure our essential services remain operational during the storm. Additionally, in conjunction with the Dublin Region Homeless Executive (DRHE), extra beds will be made available as part of the red weather plan. The organisations within the Dublin Homeless Network are working closely to support one another during these extreme circumstances to ensure no one is left without shelter.”
