Simon Week 2020 – Stop Homelessness Before It Starts
Dublin Simon Community is adding its voice to Simon Communities around Ireland as it asks people in Dublin, Kildare, Wicklow, Meath, Louth, Cavan and Monaghan to call on the government to Stop Homelessness Before it Starts as part of this year’s Simon Week.
Simon Week 2020 runs from Monday, 28th September to Sunday, 4th October and will see Simon Communities across the country campaigning on behalf of those experiencing or at risk of homelessness.
Prevention is at the core of preventing people from entering homelessness. In 2019, Dublin Simon Community prevented more than 1,000 adults and children from becoming a homeless statistic, but continued action in this area is more important than ever.
This year’s Simon Week campaign sees have three key demands for the government as part of the Stop Homelessness Before It Starts campaign:
- A comprehensive Homelessness Prevention Strategy must be put in place with ring-fenced funding in budget 2021 to stop homelessness before it starts.
- Ensure that 50% of all new social housing are one and two bed units, providing an average of 7,500 one and two bed social homes each year. This will help to develop the housing infrastructure we need to stop homelessness before it starts.
- Increase protection for renters, to ensure that tenants cannot be evicted into homelessness.
